The Arrival of Callie Jane Sitrick!
I woke up about 2:20 am on Thursday, October 1st and jumped out of bed!!! I mean jumped out quick! I never thought a 9 month pregnant lady could move so fast! I thought the baby had shifted onto my full bladder and I had started to pee my pants. I ran to the bathroom and sat on the toilet and a little liquid came out. I stood up and more liquid came out so I just figured I wasn’t done peeing so I sat back down and waited a few seconds. Stood up again and more liquid came out so I sat back down on the toilet. It still hadn’t occurred to me what was going on. I still thought it was pee. I stood up again and MORE liquid came out, this time about twice as much as the times before. I sat back down. Right then it hit me that my water was leaking. I said to David, “Honey, my water broke.” David said, “OK,” while he continued to lie in bed. He didn’t get it. I said, “No, my water broke, I’m in labor, it’s time.” All this time I was still on the toilet. Every time I stood up more water would leak out. After sitting there for about 10 minutes I called David’s Aunt Leslie. She was the person we chose to help with Jakobe when I was in labor. I called her around 2:30am. She said she’d be right over. I called my mom and told her it was time. She was funny. She KNEW the call would be early in the morning. She said she would get ready and meet us at the hospital. Then I called David’s parents. They live 2 ½ hours away. Tara answered. I told her it was time. That my water had broke. We were waiting for Leslie to come over and then would head to the hospital. Now, David is finally moving and getting out of bed. I asked him to get me a towel to put between my legs to catch any water that might still leak out. So, I walked around the house with a beach towel between my legs. (Nice picture in your head right now huh?) Right after my water broke, even when I was sitting on the toilet the contractions began. They came hard and fast. They were every 3 minutes lasting 60 seconds long. Between contractions, we packed the remaining items for the hospital. It was mostly David’s stuff to get packed. I was already prepared. I knew this day was going to come earlier than expected. We were both calm. I must have been talking loud though because Jakobe woke up. I remember going in and holding him. I held him like I have never held him before. I knew that it would be the last time that I held him and saw him before we came home with his sister. It was a special moment that I will always remember. I knew the next time I saw him I would be introducing him to his little sister. I laid him back down in his crib and he went right back to sleep. When I walked out of his room Leslie was just walking into the house. We had gone over everything the week before. She even came to Jakobe’s daycare with me to learn the routine of dropping him off and picking him up. She also was able to meet his teachers and to get permission to drop off/pick up. So she was prepared. I think I had a 4 page instruction sheet hanging on the refrigerator for her too. I said a few things to her but don’t really remember what I said. By this time I was having major contractions that hurt like hell. I remember I kept saying to David, “We have to go now, we have to go now. It hurts so bad and it’s getting close.” It was starting to thunderstorm and I wanted to get to the hospital before the weather turned really bad. The hospital was only about a 10-15 minute drive from our house. I had David check the sheets to make sure I didn’t leak any water on our sheets. They were dry. Leslie walked into our bedroom to try to get a few hours of sleep before she had to get up to take Jakobe to daycare and go to work. We got to the hospital and I got checked in a little after 4:30am. Things moved quickly. I was 4 cm dilated. They started my IV and asked me a million and five questions. I kept asking for the epidural. They had to get all my information in the computer first. The nurse checked me again. 6 cm dilated. My contractions hurt so bad. I was lying on my side and would just squeeze the side bar on my bed as hard as I could during the contraction. Oh did it hurt. I was in pain but definitely more relaxed this time around. I knew what to expect. I finally got the epidural around 6 am and the nurse said I was 8 cm dilated. She said that I was almost too dilated to get the epidural but I wanted it anyways. It was smooth sailing for the next hour. I began pushing at 7 am. The nurse told me I would have the baby before 8 am. I was calm. I was relaxed. I was having a normal conversation between each push. It didn’t hurt at all. David held one leg and my mom held the other. I am so glad that my mom and David’s mom were both in the delivery room with David and I. They were able to experience and see their granddaughter be born into this world. I wanted both moms to be in there with us this time around. I wanted them to experience it. I was adopted so my mom never got to experience pregnancy or child birth. David was born by C-Section so Tara was able to experience birth but in a different way. I thought it would be so special to have them there with us, and it was. Thank you Mom and Tara! Dr. Rohekassi, my favorite doctor of all time, came in when it got closer to the actual delivery. I had a few more pushes. Dr. Rohekass said, “You’re going to tear so I’m going to cut you.” Then I heard a ‘snip,’ but didn’t feel a thing. I remember Tara saying, “Oh my gosh, there she is!” Then my mom saying, “Look at all her hair!” I said, “I can feel it.” Meaning, I could feel her coming out. It didn’t hurt at all and I was still very calm. At 7:52 am, October 1st, 2009. Callie Jane Sitrick was born. Weighing 7 lbs. 2 oz. and 20 inches long. She looked just like Jakobe. They immediately placed her on my chest and wiped her down. She was a clean baby like Jakobe. She had a little blood in her hair and in her fat creases and some of the white stuff in her fat creases but was overall a clean baby. She was able to hang out with us for a long time before they took her down to the Nursery to do her initial newborn check. I am now on my cell phone calling people to tell them the exciting news. All this while my legs are still wide open and we are waiting for the placenta to come out. The doctor said she waits up to 30 minutes for it to come out. If it doesn’t come out she will have to go get it. We waited until 8:30. Still no placenta. Then she said she was going to have to go in and get it. She stuck her entire fist, up to her elbow inside me and pulled out my placenta. I tell you. I have never in my entire life been in so much pain before. I remember saying to the doctor “Geez Woman!” Because it hurt so bad. I can’t even describe how painful it was. She got the placenta out with no problems. She said when I had the early on bleeding it caused the placenta to stick to the walls. That’s why it didn’t come out on its own. That was just the beginning of the pain. About every 30 to 45 minutes a nurse had to ‘massage’ my stomach. I’m not talking about a massage you get at a spa. This ‘massage’ was pushing down on my stomach extremely hard and rubbing it all over. They had to make sure the entire placenta was out, that none of it got left in there or were still stuck on the walls of my uterus. Otherwise I could bleed to death. They massaged me for the rest of the day. Every time it hurt so badly. Labor and delivery was a piece of cake. If I didn’t have to go thru this placenta issue, the whole labor experience would have been a walk in the park. I was a little sore down there but not bad at all. Nothing compared to how sore I was with Jakobe. After the placenta was taken out the doctor stitched me up. That didn’t hurt this time at all. We were then moved down a floor to the recovery unit and the Nursery floor. That’s where I spent the next 2 days. All was smooth sailing. I was pretty comfortable and able to walk around a lot. Jakobe got to meet his little sister when she was a day old. He didn’t care for her at all. He just wanted to play in the cabinets and carry around his orange. He was too young to understand what was going on. We were able to get some pictures of the two of them together though. We went home on Saturday, October 3rd. everything went smooth going home. Jakobe just did his thing and Callie slept. Every once in a while he would go check her out but that was about it. I felt really good. I was hardly sore at all and was able to move around and still play with Jakobe. Heck, I even put Christmas lights up on the house when I was on maternity leave. I was on leave for 7 weeks. My soreness went away completely after about a week but was never really that sore. I still had bleeding for close to 6 weeks. I was in labor for 5 ½ hours. Much faster this time. I enjoyed the experience of labor and delivery once again. Even though, I was huge, uncomfortable, and huge! Did I mention huge? I gained 45 lbs during this pregnancy. All the weight, sleepless nights, numb hands, and back aches were all worth it! We are so blessed to have Callie in our lives! She brings so many smiles and so much laughter to us every day. We love her so much! She is our little ladybug!
